During the middle of COVID, I found myself looking for a way out from my 9–5 job. As a teacher, I wasn’t feeling the fulfillment that usually comes with a new school year and I had just decided that I needed a way out, I would not be chained to my job.

Enter sports betting.

I had begun to dabble in sports betting, taking earnings from my writing side hustle here and on Upwork and putting them on local teams to win games.

Winning was wildly exciting. Losing was just part of the game, if you didn’t win this time you were sure to hit next time.

After 6 months of betting casually, I hit two 4 team parlays and turned $1,400 into 12 grand. Not bad for a day's work.

Instead of cashing out, I rolled it over into the weekend, placing 7 grand on college football and $4,444 into a Daily Fantasy Football pool.

After Saturday concluded, all of my college football bets had been lost, and with it, I had lost 7 thousand dollars. I was down in the dumps, to say the least. Instead of paying down debt or putting that money towards my family’s mortgage, I lit it on fire.
